Pop Shop V, Plate III - by Keith Haring Poster 75x100 cm / 30x40″

By the time Pop Shop V, Plate III was created, Keith Haring was at the height of his career, yet sadly just one year away from his death. A few years earlier, he had opened his first Pop Shop in Manhattan’s SoHo, selling badges, T-shirts and other merchandise for as little as 50 cents in an effort to make his art more commercially accessible to a wider audience.

This transition from painting to multiples also led to Haring’s adoption of screen printing, a commercial technique that had become popular in the 1960s. The medium gave him the opportunity to experiment with bold colour, expressive line and large editions. Printed in five colours—black, pink, orange, purple and turquoise—Pop Shop V, Plate III demonstrates Haring’s mastery of screen printing as a medium.

It soon became evident that the energy and curiosity evident in Haring’s paintings translated perfectly into printmaking. He went on to collaborate with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and Holland. Prints featuring singular images were released as portfolios of four, each from an edition of 200, while the Quad prints, which brought four images together in a grid format, were released in an edition of 75.

In total, 875 prints featuring the vibrant pink, orange and turquoise Pop Shop V imagery were produced, demonstrating the remarkable productivity of Haring’s printmaking practice. Despite being produced in editions, each individual work reflects the care and attention Haring devoted to the printing process. Although the singular Pop Shop V prints were originally released as four-part portfolios and remain particularly desirable in their original sets with matching edition numbers, many portfolios have since been divided.

By the time of his death, Haring had produced such a substantial body of prints that the exact number is difficult to determine. Numerous unsigned editions exist on the market, although these are generally considered valuable only when approved or authenticated by the Keith Haring Foundation.

Today, Keith Haring’s prints remain highly sought-after multiples, celebrated for their bold graphic language, vibrant colours and instantly recognisable Pop Art imagery.
