By the time Pop Shop V was created, Keith Haring had reached the height of his artistic career and was entering the final years of his life. The work belongs to the celebrated Pop Shop series, which reflected Haring’s determination to make contemporary art more accessible beyond the traditional gallery system.

A few years earlier, Haring had opened his first Pop Shop in Manhattan’s SoHo in 1986, offering badges, T-shirts and other affordable objects featuring his instantly recognisable imagery. The project extended the democratic spirit of his Subway Drawings while allowing his art to reach children, collectors and a much broader public.

This move from unique works towards multiples also encouraged Haring’s adoption of screen printing, a technique strongly associated with commercial printing and the development of Pop Art. The medium gave him new opportunities to experiment with colour, repetition and line while producing his imagery in larger editions.

Printed in five colours—black, pink, orange, purple and turquoise—Pop Shop V demonstrates Haring’s mastery of screen printing. The carefully layered colours create a vivid, graphic composition while preserving the immediacy and energy of his drawing style.

Haring’s natural curiosity and experimentation translated seamlessly from painting into printmaking. As his reputation grew, he worked with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands, establishing printmaking as an important part of his artistic practice.

The Pop Shop V works were issued in several formats, including individual images released in portfolios of four and Quad prints combining multiple compositions within a grid. These editions reflect the extraordinary productivity of Haring’s printmaking while also demonstrating the close attention he paid to colour, composition and the technical process of production.

Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly sought after for their bold graphic language, vivid colour and cultural significance.
