By the time Pop Shop V was created, Keith Haring had reached the height of his artistic career and was entering the final years of his life. The work belongs to the celebrated Pop Shop series, which grew out of Haring’s ambition to make his art more accessible through affordable and widely distributed objects.

Haring opened his first Pop Shop in Manhattan’s SoHo in 1986, offering badges, T-shirts and other products featuring his instantly recognisable imagery. The project extended his commitment to bringing art beyond traditional galleries and collectors, while continuing the public and accessible spirit of his Subway Drawings.

This transition towards multiples also encouraged Haring’s growing interest in screen printing, a medium closely associated with the development of Pop Art and popularised by artists such as Andy Warhol. Screen printing gave Haring the opportunity to experiment with vivid colour, repetition and bold graphic forms while producing larger editions of his imagery.

Printed in four colours—black, red, brown and yellow—Pop Shop V demonstrates Haring’s mastery of the screen-printing process. The medium allowed him to retain the immediacy of his drawing style while exploring the possibilities of colour and reproduction on a larger scale.

Haring’s energy and curiosity translated naturally from painting and drawing into printmaking. He developed an international network of publishers and collaborators across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands, making printmaking an increasingly important part of his artistic practice.

The Pop Shop V works were released in several formats, including individual images presented as portfolios of four and Quad prints bringing multiple compositions together in a grid. These editions highlight the remarkable productivity of Haring’s printmaking while also reflecting the careful attention he devoted to colour, composition and the printing process.

Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly sought after for their distinctive graphic language, vibrant colour and cultural significance. Pop Shop V represents an important chapter in Haring’s exploration of Pop Art, screen printing and accessible contemporary art, demonstrating how his iconic imagery could retain its energy and impact through reproduction.
