The first Keith Haring Pop Shop opened in Manhattan’s SoHo neighbourhood in 1986, creating a new space where art could be experienced outside the traditional gallery environment. Alongside murals created by Haring himself, the shop offered affordable objects such as badges, T-shirts and other products featuring his instantly recognisable imagery. The project reflected Haring’s commitment to making art accessible to a wider audience and to challenging the traditional distinction between fine art and popular culture.

Haring’s approach to the Pop Shop was closely connected to the spirit of his Subway Drawings. By reproducing his imagery across different formats, he brought the visual language of his public art into everyday life. The project also challenged conventional attitudes within the art world, particularly the emphasis placed on unique and highly priced original works.

Printed in four colours—black, red, brown and yellow—Pop Shop IV demonstrates Haring’s mastery of screen printing. Although he had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques during the late 1970s and early 1980s, screen printing became increasingly important to his practice from 1983 onwards. The medium allowed Haring to create multiple impressions while maintaining the bold outlines, vivid colours and graphic immediacy that defined his drawings.

Influenced in part by the growing importance of screen printing within Pop Art, particularly through the work of Andy Warhol, Haring quickly developed an increasingly sophisticated approach to printmaking. His energy and experimentation translated naturally from painting and drawing into print, leading to collaborations with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

The Pop Shop IV works were issued in several formats. Individual compositions were released in portfolios of four, while the Quad prints brought four images together within a grid format. These editions demonstrate the scale of Haring’s printmaking activity while also highlighting the care he devoted to colour, composition and production.

Despite the reproducible nature of his imagery, Haring’s prints remain highly valued for their distinctive visual language and cultural significance. Today, Keith Haring prints and posters continue to attract collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts, with the Pop Shop series representing an important chapter in the artist’s exploration of accessibility, reproduction and popular culture.
