Pop Shop IV, Plate III - by Keith Haring Poster 75x100 cm / 30x40″

One of the most recognisable works in Keith Haring’s celebrated Pop Shop series, Pop Shop IV brings together several of the artist’s most iconic motifs, including the Radiant Child, Barking Dog and Winged Figure. Surrounded by energetic lines and rendered in bold contrasting colours, the composition captures the playful movement and visual immediacy that became synonymous with Haring’s work.

The strength of Pop Shop IV lies in Haring’s ability to combine the visual language of cartoons and street art with a highly distinctive graphic vocabulary. His simplified figures, expressive contours and dynamic forms create a sense of continuous movement, while the repetition of familiar symbols gives the work an instantly recognisable character.

Haring opened his first Pop Shop in Manhattan’s SoHo in 1986, creating a space where his art could reach a much broader audience. The shop featured murals alongside affordable objects such as T-shirts, badges and other products decorated with his imagery. The project reflected Haring’s belief that art should be accessible beyond traditional galleries and collectors, while challenging the boundary between fine art, popular culture and commercial reproduction.

Printed in four colours—black, red, brown and yellow—Pop Shop IV demonstrates Haring’s growing mastery of screen printing. Although he had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques, screen printing became an important part of his practice during the 1980s, allowing him to translate the energy of his drawings into carefully constructed multiple editions.

Haring’s enthusiasm for printmaking soon developed into an international practice, with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The Pop Shop IV works were issued in different formats, including individual prints and Quad compositions, highlighting the artist’s remarkable productivity as a printmaker.

Despite the reproducible nature of the medium, Haring paid close attention to colour, composition, balance and technical precision. This combination of accessibility and artistic intent remains central to the enduring appeal of the Pop Shop series.

Today, Keith Haring prints and posters continue to attract collectors and art enthusiasts for their bold graphic language, cultural significance and connection to 1980s Pop Art. Pop Shop IV is a striking example of Haring’s ability to transform a small group of iconic symbols into a dynamic and enduring work of contemporary art.
