Keith Haring’s celebrated Pop Shop III series showcases the artist’s inventive approach to translating his energetic drawings into the medium of screen printing. The series takes its name from Haring’s iconic Pop Shop, which opened in Manhattan’s SoHo in 1986, and reflects his commitment to making contemporary art accessible to a broader audience through affordable, widely produced editions.

Created for both children and collectors, the Pop Shop offered everyday objects featuring Haring’s instantly recognisable imagery, including T-shirts, badges and magnets. For Haring, the Pop Shop was an extension of the public art he had created in New York’s subway stations and a way to challenge the traditional divide between fine art and commercial culture.

Printed in five layers of colour—grey, black, green, red and yellow—Pop Shop III demonstrates Haring’s sophisticated command of screen printing. Although he had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques during the late 1970s and early 1980s, screen printing became increasingly important to his practice from 1983 onwards. The medium allowed him to reproduce his distinctive imagery while retaining the bold lines, vivid colours and dynamic energy of his drawings.

Haring’s embrace of screen printing was influenced in part by the growing importance of the process within Pop Art, particularly through the work of Andy Warhol, one of his key artistic influences. As Haring’s interest in printmaking developed, he worked with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands, helping establish prints as a major part of his artistic output.

The Pop Shop III works were issued in different formats, including individual compositions released in portfolios and Quad prints combining multiple images in a grid. Despite the reproducible nature of the medium, Haring devoted considerable attention to colour, composition and the technical quality of each edition, demonstrating the same energy and precision that defined his drawings.

Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly sought after for their bold graphic language, cultural significance and connection to the development of 1980s Pop Art.
