Keith Haring’s celebrated Pop Shop III series demonstrates the artist’s innovative approach to translating his energetic drawings into the medium of screen printing. The title refers to Haring’s groundbreaking Pop Shop, opened in Manhattan’s SoHo in 1986, and reflects his ambition to make contemporary art accessible to a broader audience through affordable, widely distributed editions.
Designed for children and collectors alike, the Pop Shop offered everyday objects featuring Haring’s instantly recognisable imagery, including T-shirts, badges and magnets. More than a commercial venture, the project challenged traditional ideas about the art market by bringing Haring’s visual language beyond galleries and museums and into everyday life. It represented a continuation of the democratic spirit of his Subway Drawings and his desire to break down the boundary between fine art and popular culture.
Printed in five layers of colour—grey, black, green, red and yellow—Pop Shop III reveals Haring’s sophisticated understanding of screen printing. Although he had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques during the late 1970s and early 1980s, screen printing became increasingly important to his practice from 1983 onwards. The process offered Haring the ability to reproduce his imagery in multiple editions while preserving the bold contours, vibrant colour and rhythmic energy of his original drawings.
Influenced in part by the growing importance of screen printing within Pop Art, particularly through the work of Andy Warhol, Haring embraced the medium with remarkable creativity. His interest in printmaking quickly developed into an international practice, leading to collaborations with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.
The Pop Shop III works were released in different edition formats, including individual prints and Quad compositions. The series highlights Haring’s extraordinary productivity as a printmaker while demonstrating the careful attention he devoted to colour, composition and the technical process of reproduction.
Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly sought after for their distinctive graphic language, cultural significance and connection to the development of 1980s Pop Art. Pop Shop III is a striking example of Haring’s ability to combine bold visual design, accessibility and contemporary art within a single, instantly recognisable composition.
