Keith Haring’s Pop Shop III, Plate I series reflects the artist’s innovative approach to translating his distinctive drawings into the medium of screen printing. Pop Shop III demonstrates Haring’s mastery of screen printing, using five layers of colour—grey, black, green, red and yellow—to create a vivid and carefully constructed composition. Although Haring had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques during the late 1970s and early 1980s, screen printing became increasingly important to his practice from 1983 onwards. The process allowed him to reproduce his imagery while maintaining the bold lines, strong contrasts and energetic quality of his drawings.

Haring’s interest in printmaking soon expanded into an international practice, with collaborations involving publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The Pop Shop III works were produced in different edition formats, including individual prints and Quad compositions, demonstrating the artist’s remarkable productivity and his ability to adapt his visual language to multiple formats.

Despite their accessible and highly reproducible nature, Haring’s prints were produced with considerable attention to colour, composition and technical quality. This balance between mass appeal and artistic precision remains central to the enduring significance of the Pop Shop series.
