The bold black outlines of Keith Haring’s Pop Shop II are characteristic of the visual language he developed through his early Subway Drawings and public works in New York during the 1980s. Haring, however, remained committed to the idea that his work should reach audiences beyond traditional galleries and collectors. The Pop Shop became an important expression of his belief in accessibility and in the ability of reproduced imagery to communicate on a broad cultural level.

Printed in four layers of colour—yellow, red, blue and black—Pop Shop II demonstrates Haring’s command of screen printing. Although he had experimented with other printmaking techniques, screen printing became increasingly central to his practice during the 1980s, allowing him to produce multiple impressions while preserving the clarity, rhythm and energy of his original drawings.

Influenced in part by the development of screen printing within Pop Art, including the work of Andy Warhol, Haring pushed the medium towards increasingly inventive and expressive compositions. His enthusiasm for printmaking soon led to collaborations with publishers across the United States, Europe and Japan, establishing prints as a significant part of his artistic practice.

The Pop Shop II works were produced in different edition formats, including individual prints and Quad compositions. Each reflects Haring’s ability to translate his spontaneous graphic language into a carefully constructed printed work, combining technical precision with the immediacy of his drawing style.
