The bold black outlines of Keith Haring’s Pop Shop II reflect the distinctive graphic style he developed through his Subway Drawings and public works across New York in the early 1980s. These early experiments established the visual vocabulary that would make Haring internationally recognised, with recurring symbols such as the Barking Dog, Radiant Child and Winged Figure becoming instantly identifiable elements of his work. Repeated in vivid colours influenced by advertising and popular culture, these figures formed a playful yet powerful artistic language that defined much of Haring’s career.
In 1986, Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, creating a space intended for both children and collectors. The shop offered affordable objects featuring his iconic imagery, including T-shirts, badges and magnets. More than a commercial project, the Pop Shop represented Haring’s commitment to making art accessible to a broader public and extending the spirit of his subway art into everyday life.
The project challenged traditional ideas about the art market by deliberately bringing together fine art, popular culture and commercial reproduction. Haring viewed the Pop Shop as an extension of his public practice, rejecting the idea that artistic value should depend solely on expensive, unique works intended for established collectors.
Produced in four layers of colour—yellow, red, blue and black—Pop Shop II demonstrates Haring’s growing mastery of screen printing. Although he had experimented with lithography and other printmaking techniques, screen printing became increasingly important to his practice during the 1980s. The medium allowed him to reproduce his imagery in multiple editions while preserving the clarity, energy and immediacy of his original drawings.
Haring’s enthusiasm for printmaking soon developed into an international practice, with collaborations involving publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The Pop Shop II works were released in portfolios and editions, reflecting both the accessibility and the artistic importance of Haring’s approach to reproduction.
Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly regarded for their distinctive graphic quality, cultural significance and connection to the development of 1980s Pop Art. Pop Shop II captures Haring’s ability to transform simple lines, vivid colour and recognisable symbols into an artwork that is both visually immediate and deeply connected to his ideas about accessibility and popular culture.
