The bold black outlines of Keith Haring’s Pop Shop II are characteristic of the graphic style he developed through his early Subway Drawings and public works in New York during the 1980s. These early experiments established the distinctive visual language that would make Haring one of the most recognisable artists of his generation. Recurring symbols such as the Barking Dog, Radiant Child and Winged Figure became central to his imagery, repeatedly appearing in vivid colours inspired by advertising, popular culture and the visual energy of the city.
In 1986, Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, creating a space where children, collectors and a much wider audience could encounter his work. The shop offered affordable objects featuring his iconic imagery, including T-shirts, badges and magnets. For Haring, the project represented an extension of the public art he had created in the subway system and reflected his commitment to making art accessible beyond traditional galleries and museums.
The Pop Shop challenged established ideas about the separation between fine art and commercial culture. Supported by artists such as Andy Warhol, Haring’s project embraced the possibilities of reproduction and mass communication while questioning the idea that artistic value depended exclusively on unique, original works.
Pop Shop II also demonstrates Haring’s growing mastery of screen printing. Produced using four layers of colour—yellow, red, blue and black—the work combines precise colour registration with the spontaneous energy of Haring’s graphic vocabulary. After experimenting with lithography and other printmaking processes, Haring increasingly embraced screen printing during the 1980s, using the medium to create multiple works while retaining the impact of his original drawings.
His enthusiasm for printmaking led to collaborations with publishers across the United States, Europe and Asia, establishing prints as an essential part of his artistic practice. The Pop Shop II series was released in portfolios as well as individual compositions, demonstrating both the commercial reach and the artistic importance of Haring’s print production.
Today, Keith Haring prints and posters remain highly regarded for their distinctive graphic language, cultural significance and connection to the development of 1980s Pop Art. Pop Shop II captures Haring’s ability to transform simple lines, vivid colour and instantly recognisable symbols into an accessible yet culturally significant work of contemporary art.
