Pop Shop I, Plate III - by Keith Haring Poster 75x100 cm / 30x40″

Created in 1987, Pop Shop I emerged during one of the most important periods of Keith Haring’s career, following the opening of his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan. Conceived as a space where art could be experienced and purchased by both children and collectors, the Pop Shop reflected Haring’s belief that contemporary art should be accessible beyond the traditional gallery system.

The project extended the same democratic spirit that had defined Haring’s Subway Drawings. Instead of reserving his imagery for major canvases and established collectors, Haring transformed his instantly recognisable symbols into posters, clothing, badges and other affordable objects. In doing so, he deliberately challenged the distinction between fine art, commercial design and popular culture.

Haring’s visual language developed from his early fascination with comics, cartoons, advertising and Pop Art. Throughout his career, he repeatedly returned to a distinctive vocabulary of symbols, including the Barking Dog, Radiant Child and Winged Figure. Rendered with bold outlines, simplified forms and vivid colour, these recurring motifs became central to his identity and remain among the most recognisable images of contemporary art.

Pop Shop I also demonstrates Haring’s sophisticated understanding of screen printing and the possibilities of printmaking. Produced through multiple layers of colour, including black, red, blue, magenta and yellow, the work combines technical precision with the spontaneous energy characteristic of his drawings. Haring increasingly embraced screen printing during the 1980s, using the medium to translate his imagery into multiple editions while preserving its graphic impact.

As his reputation grew, Haring collaborated with publishers and printmakers across the United States, Europe and Asia. His print editions and portfolios became an increasingly important part of his practice, allowing his imagery to circulate internationally while maintaining his commitment to accessibility and mass communication.

Today, Keith Haring prints remain highly sought after for their cultural significance, distinctive visual language and connection to the development of 1980s Pop Art. Pop Shop I is particularly significant as an expression of Haring’s belief that art could exist beyond museums and galleries and become part of everyday life.
