Keith Haring’s Pop Shop I, created in 1987, reflects the artist’s revolutionary approach to making contemporary art accessible to a wider audience. 

Produced shortly after Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, the project was designed for both children and collectors, offering affordable products such as T-shirts, badges and magnets decorated with his instantly recognisable imagery.

The Pop Shop challenged the traditional art market by bringing Haring’s visual language beyond galleries and museums and into everyday life. His approach was closely connected to the Subway Drawings that had established his reputation on the streets of New York, allowing him to blur the boundaries between fine art, popular culture and commercial design.

Haring’s imagery was heavily influenced by comics, cartoons, advertising and Pop Art. Throughout his career, he developed a series of recurring symbols, including the Barking Dog, Radiant Child and Winged Figure, which he reproduced repeatedly in bold colours and simplified forms. These instantly recognisable motifs became central to his artistic identity and helped establish Haring as one of the defining figures of 1980s contemporary art.

This work also demonstrates Haring’s growing mastery of screen printing. Printed through five layers of colour—black, red, blue, magenta and yellow—the composition highlights the precision, energy and visual clarity that made his prints so distinctive. Although Haring had experimented with other printmaking techniques, screen printing became particularly important to his practice in the 1980s, allowing him to translate the immediacy of his drawings into multiple editions.

Haring’s interest in printmaking soon expanded through collaborations with publishers in the United States, Europe and Asia. The resulting editions and portfolios played an important role in establishing his work within the international print market, while maintaining his commitment to accessibility and visual communication.
