Pop Shop V, Plate IV was released when Keith Haring was at the height of his career, yet sadly just one year before his death. A few years earlier, Haring had opened his first Pop Shop in Manhattan’s SoHo, selling badges, T-shirts and other merchandise for as little as 50 cents in an effort to make his art more commercially accessible to everyone.

This transition from painting to multiples also led to Haring’s adoption of screen printing, a commercial technique made popular in the 1960s. The medium gave Haring the opportunity to experiment with colour, line and composition across large editions. Printed in five colours—black, pink, orange, purple and turquoise—Pop Shop V, Plate IV demonstrates Haring’s distinctive mastery of screen printing.

It soon became clear that the energy and curiosity evident in Haring’s paintings translated naturally into printmaking. He went on to work with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and Holland. Prints featuring individual images were released as portfolios of four, each from an edition of 200, while the Quad prints, which combined four images in a grid format, were released in an edition of 75.

In total, 875 prints featuring the vibrant pink, orange and turquoise Pop Shop V imagery were produced, highlighting the prolific nature of Haring’s printmaking practice. Despite their editioned format, each individual print reflects the care and attention Haring devoted to the production process. Although the individual Pop Shop V prints were originally issued as four-part portfolios and remain particularly valuable in their original sets with matching edition numbers, many portfolios have inevitably been divided over time.

By the time of his death, Haring had produced such a vast body of prints that the exact number is difficult to determine. Numerous unsigned editions can be found on the market, although these are generally considered valuable only when approved by the Keith Haring Foundation. Today, Haring’s prints remain among the most sought-after multiples in the art market, celebrated for their bold graphic language, vibrant colours and instantly recognisable imagery.
