The Pop Shop series stands as a defining example of Keith Haring’s ability to translate the energy of his drawings into the medium of screen printing. With its bold black outlines and instantly recognisable imagery, Pop Shop II reflects the distinctive visual language Haring developed through his Subway Drawings and public works across New York in the early 1980s.

Haring’s recurring motifs, including the Barking Dog, Radiant Child and Winged Figure, became central to his artistic identity. In 1986, Haring opened his first Pop Shop in downtown Manhattan, creating a space where children and collectors could encounter and purchase his work at accessible prices. The shop offered T-shirts, badges, magnets and other objects featuring his iconic imagery. More than a retail concept, the Pop Shop extended the democratic spirit of Haring’s subway art and challenged the traditional boundaries between fine art, popular culture and commercial reproduction.

The project attracted attention from artists and cultural figures interested in the possibilities of mechanical reproduction, while some members of the traditional art world were more critical of its commercial approach. For Haring, however, accessibility was fundamental to his practice. The Pop Shop allowed him to reach an audience beyond collectors and galleries while maintaining the immediacy of his public art.

Printed in four layers of colour—yellow, red, blue and black—Pop Shop II demonstrates Haring’s growing mastery of screen printing. Although he had previously experimented with lithography and other techniques, screen printing offered him a powerful way to reproduce his imagery while preserving the clarity and energy of his original drawings. Influenced in part by the development of screen printing within Pop Art, particularly through artists such as Andy Warhol, Haring embraced the medium and pushed it towards increasingly inventive compositions.

His enthusiasm for printmaking quickly developed into a major part of his career, leading to collaborations with publishers across the United States, Switzerland, Japan, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands. The Pop Shop II works were produced in different edition formats, including portfolios and Quad compositions, reflecting Haring’s remarkable productivity as a printmaker.

Today, Keith Haring prints and posters continue to attract collectors and art enthusiasts for their combination of graphic simplicity, cultural relevance and expressive energy.
