Ludo 2 - by Keith Haring Poster 75x100 cm / 30x40″

Keith Haring’s Ludo 2 is reminiscent of Aztec and Aboriginal art through its flowing, organic shapes and thick, bold lines, which combine to create a rhythmic pattern across the picture surface. Haring explained that his drawings were not intended to imitate life, but rather to “create life” and “invent life,” an approach he associated with so-called primitive ideas. Ludo 2 exemplifies this concept through its dynamic, kinetic composition, placing greater emphasis on pattern, movement and visual rhythm than on realistic representation.

Throughout the Ludo series, Haring uses red as a dominant colour, depicting eyes, limbs and other body parts in highly abstracted forms. The repeated motifs and intense visual language create a noticeable sense of tension and anxiety, distinguishing the series from much of Haring’s earlier, more playful work.

This darker quality reflects an important turning point in Haring’s artistic practice. As the AIDS epidemic increasingly affected his community during the 1980s, Haring’s work began to engage more directly with themes of fear, vulnerability, suffering and mortality. Within this context, Ludo 2 demonstrates how Haring’s distinctive visual vocabulary could convey both energetic movement and the growing emotional pressures of the period.
